Long live the Tush Push: Most memorable moments from the Eagles' signature play

by Ariel Simpson

After the Tush Push dominated the league for three years, NFL owners voted this week on whether to ban the play. Ultimately, they decided not to eliminate the fan favorite — and one of the most unstoppable plays in sports — from the game. In honor of its return, here are the best Tush Push moments in Eagles history.

The team’s first Tush Push: According to an ESPN report, the Eagles' first use of the Tush Push came in Week 1 of the 2022 season against the Detroit Lions. Jalen Hurts converted a fourth-and-1 for a first down to secure a 38-35 win with one minute remaining.

Six Tush Pushes against the Rams: In October 2023, the Eagles used the Tush Push six times against the Los Angeles Rams. Four were converted, including a pivotal touchdown at the end of the first half, which led to a 23-14 Birds victory. Their conversion rate improved as the season progressed.

The Tush Push really takes off: The Dolphins were no match for the Tush Push. A few weeks after the Birds' success with the Tush Push against the Rams in 2023, they ran the play four times against the Dolphins: three times on fourth down and once at the Miami goal line. All four were successful in a 31-17 win.

The fake Tush Push: While the outcome of the game made the play far less memorable — a 35-31 loss on New Year’s Eve amid the Eagles’ 2023 collapse — the team’s fake Tush Push against the Arizona Cardinals showed how versatile the play can be, and put opponents back on their heels.

Hurts took the snap and pitched it to Kenneth Gainwell, a former high school QB, who threw a pass to DeVonta Smith for a 19-yard gain and a first down. That was one of the rare times the Eagles employed a fake Tush Push, and definitely the most successful.

Driving the Commanders crazy: In an attempt to stop the Eagles near the goal line in the NFC championship game on Jan. 26, Washington linebacker Frankie Luvu dove over the line — not once, but twice — before the ball was snapped, and the officials nearly awarded the Eagles a touchdown as punishment.

First score in Super Bowl LIX: Would the Tush Push work without the retired Jason Kelce? Despite some struggles early, the play was used effectively throughout the 2024 season, including using it to score the first touchdown in Super Bowl LIX after twice scoring on it in the NFC championship game.

The team also scored the first touchdown in its Super Bowl LVII loss to the Chiefs on a Tush Push, helping to show off the play on the game’s biggest stage. It helped Hurts set a Super Bowl record — and not just for quarterbacks — with three rushing touchdowns in a game.
