'It's a mess': Jordan Mailata on state of NFL Players Association in wake of high-level resignations

After a Pablo Torre Finds Out episode revealed a previously hidden arbitration ruling in a collusion case, the union has been rocked by high-level resignations from executive director Lloyd Howell and chief strategy officer JC Tretter.

“We’ll call it how it is: It’s a mess,” Jordan Mailata, the Eagles’ player rep with the NFLPA, said Wednesday. “We have the right people in place right now — right now.”

Union members recently learned that leadership had agreed to hiding the findings of an arbitration ruling with the league. After filing a claim in October 2022 under previous leadership alleging that league owners colluded to limit guaranteed money in player contracts following Deshaun Watson’s fully-guaranteed deal, the union learned that an arbitrator in ruling in favor of the NFL also found that the NFLPA had shown “a clear preponderance of the evidence” that NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell pushed owners to restrict guaranteed money in player contracts.

Jalen Hurts addresses not wearing Super Bowl ring

Jalen Hurts secured two rings this offseason — one to honor his marriage and another to commemorate the Eagles’ Super Bowl victory.

It’s unclear, though, if he’s put the latter on yet.

In one photo from Friday’s ring ceremony, Hurts posed with the open box clutched between his hands alongside Nick Sirianni and Jeffrey Lurie, who each wore the rings on their fingers. In another photo, Hurts sat on a sofa with Brandon Graham, who had both of his Super Bowl rings on either hand. A ringless Hurts simply pointed his left index finger to the Lombardi Trophy in his right hand.

Early first look which Eagles players are in starting roles

The Eagles lined up for their first team drills of camp right around 10:30 Wednesday morning and offered up a first look at who is in the various starting spots that are up in the air.

With Kenyon Green missing practice, the mystery of the right guard position was far less suspenseful. Tyler Steen got the first look with the first team.

On defense, though, there was some intrigue. In base, Cooper DeJean lined up next to his podcast partner, Reed Blankenship. When the Eagles went into nickel, DeJean moved into the slot and Sydney Brown slotted in at safety. Kelee Ringo, meanwhile, was the outside corner opposite Quinyon Mitchell.

While Nakobe Dean is the only Eagles player with an official injury designation to start camp, a few Eagles appear to be sitting out the first practice.

Interior offensive lineman Kenyon Green is watching the early portion of practice from the sideline without a helmet. So is interior defensive lineman Jalen Carter, who is looking on with Dean while the Eagles warm up.

Nakobe Dean still recovering from injury, rookie Jihaad Campbell to practice

Howie Roseman and Nick Sirianni took the podium Wednesday morning, and Roseman started the interview session with an injury update.

Linebacker Nakobe Dean will begin camp on the physically unable to perform list as he continues to recover from a torn patellar tendon.

Dean is the only player with an injury designation, Roseman said, meaning all other players are scheduled to be on the field for the first practice Wednesday.

Eagles to take the field in first practice of 2025 training camp

The Eagles' road to defending its Super Bowl title begins Wednesday morning at the NovaCare Complex.

The Birds will take the field in their first practice of training camp at 10 a.m., and nearly all the drama is on defense, where there are several interesting depth charge battles for backup roles.

Head coach Nick Sirianni is expected to speak to reporters before practice Wednesday.

Welcome to training camp

The relationship between Nick Sirianni and Jalen Hurts seems just fine

It's the first day of school as the Eagles hit the field at the NovaCare Complex later this morning to open their 2025 training camp, and it's worth hopping in the DeLorean and traveling back to one year ago.

On the day the Eagles opened camp last year, the topic du jour was the weird relationship between Nick Sirianni and Jalen Hurts. The Athletic had reported a strain, and both subjects were asked about it. Hurts had just a month earlier given a strange response when asked a question about Sirianni ceding control of the offense.

Hurts on the first day of camp turned the temperature down. Sirianni said the relationship was good. The rest, they say, is history.

A first look at new offensive coordinator Kevin Patullo

We’ve seen about as wide a range of outcomes from the Eagles’ offensive-coordinator carousel as possible over the last two seasons. Whether Kevin Patullo falls closer to Kellen Moore or Brian Johnson as the Eagles’ primary play-caller won’t become clear until the regular season, but training camp will offer the first extended glimpse at how things may change with him as the driving force behind the offense.

There’s a compelling argument — one that centers on the preferences of Jalen Hurts and the domineering nature of the Eagles’ historic run game with Saquon Barkley — that they shouldn’t change much from last season.

The group demonstrated last season how challenging it is for opposing defenses to counter a triple-threat offense: a multiple rushing attack, an elite offensive line, and a running back who can break free when the line can’t. Still, Hurts’ excellence in Super Bowl LIX against a defense focused on stopping Barkley showed that this offense’s ceiling is even higher than it appeared during most of the regular season.

One big question facing the Eagles: Who will start at right guard?

For a fourth year running, the Eagles enter training camp with a competition brewing for the spot next to Lane Johnson.

Tyler Steen has been a constant in each of the last two position battles, but he lost out to Cam Jurgens in 2023 and Mekhi Becton last summer. He played 399 offensive snaps last season without many notable hiccups.

This should be Steen’s best chance to earn the job.

Eagles will have one open practice at the Linc

For the third-straight year, the Eagles will old just one open practice to fan.

This year's open practice at Lincoln Financial Field will take place on Sunday, Aug. 10 at 6 p.m. The Eagles are charging $10.25 a ticket, with proceeds going to autism research, but parking is free.

The Eagles have held open practices at the Linc each year since 2013, when the team moved camp from Lehigh University in Bethlehem to Philadelphia. Doug Pederson opted to keep the camp in Philadelphia when he became head coach, and Nick Sirianni hasn’t made any changes.
