Flyers keep it close against the Red Wings, but drop second straight game in 6-4 loss
Owen Tippett tied the game at 4 early in the third period, but goals from Detroit's Patrick Kane and Lucas Raymond but the Red Wings ahead for good.
DETROIT — The Flyers did come back but then fell short, losing 6-4 to the Detroit Red Wings.
The loss gives the Flyers consecutive losses after a two-game winning streak, which included a 4-1 win against the same team from Motown.
Trailing by a pair in the third period, the Orange and Black tied it up early before Detroit’s Patrick Kane scored the go-ahead goal 7 minutes, 22 seconds into the final frame. Lucas Raymond scored an empty-netter with 1:12 left.

Hurt by turnovers throughout the game, the Flyers started playing better and controlled the boards more in the third period. Ryan Poehling cut the Red Wings’ lead to 4-3 by tapping in a turnaround Sean Couturier shot at the left post. The shot was set up with that good board work and a keep by Travis Sanheim at the left point.
Owen Tippett tied the game at 4 when he took a cross-ice pass from Scott Laughton and took off down the left wing. He skated past Joe Veleno, around Jeff Petry, and tucked the puck between the skate of goalie Alex Lyon and the right post.
The Flyers had four shots in the first period but made it count on the first one. Travis Konecny scored 66 seconds into the game to give the Flyers the lead. Couturier intercepted a Simon Edvinsson pass intended for J.T. Compher in the neutral zone and fed the puck up the boards to Joel Farabee. The winger then backhanded it to Konecny as he streaked down the middle, finishing a backhand five-hole goal.
Detroit tied it up later in the first period while Tippett was serving a four-minute penalty for high-sticking. Compher scored on a redirect off a pass by Dylan Larkin. Before that, goalie Sam Ersson made a pair of top-tier saves on Marco Kasper from 10 feet out and Larkin from 20.
In the second period, the Red Wings scored on three of seven shots, with two of the goals coming on odd-man rushes.
Cam York tried to hit his partner Sanheim at Detroit’s blue line, but Kane intercepted it and the Red Wings got a three-on-one. Kane sent a saucer pass to Alex DeBrincat for the one-timer to make it 2-1 for Detroit. York played one more shift and then did not see the ice for the final 7:29 of the second period or the entire third.
The other odd-man goal came off the stick of Veleno to make it 4-2. The Flyers had some good pressure but were clumped up on the left side. Laughton tried to pass to Rasmus Ristolainen inside the Detroit blue line but the pass was intercepted by Veleno. The Red Wings broke out three across as Laughton was able to get back for the high man. Veleno had a give-and-go with Christian Fischer before finishing past Ersson.

In between the two goals, Detroit’s Michael Rasmussen scored off an offensive zone face-off. Before his goal made it 3-2, Noah Cates tied the game at 2. Nick Seeler’s point shot hit Tyson Foerster in the slot and the forward collected the puck to put a shot on goal, except his shot hit Cates’ leg and popped over former Flyers goalie Alex Lyon. The goal was started with some good board work by the Cates line, which also includes Bobby Brink, deep in the Detroit zone.

Defenseman Emil Andrae was a healthy scratch for the third straight game.
