Revolution Taco: Food truckers come in from the cold in Rittenhouse

Lots of varieties, including house-made chorizo, roast duck, Gold Angus ground beef, smoked mushroom, fried tofu, chipotle barbecue beef, beef tongue and cheek, glazed pork belly, and a fish of the week

Walking west on Walnut Street from 20th Street, you reach a string of bars right away: Tria Taproom, the Irish Pub, The Cafe, and The Bards. Walk a bit farther, and you reach the culinary nirvana that is Vernick Food & Drink. (Walk even farther, and you're over the bridge and in University City, whose student population could easily subsist on tacos.)

Food truckers Mike Sultan, Carolyn Nguyen, and Alan Krawitz believed that the street off Rittenhouse Square did not necessarily need another bar, but figured that a taco shop would be nice.

Friday, Jan. 8 is the grand opening of Revolution Taco, next to The Bards, at 2015 Walnut St. On opening day, they will give away tacos - one per customer - from noon to 1 p.m. and again from 4 to 6 p.m.

The 30-seat BYOB, geared toward takeout, is open now with limited hours and menu.

Menu is evolving for now, and yes, it's cheffy. Right now, the board offers house-made chorizo, roast duck, Gold Angus ground beef, smoked mushroom, fried tofu, chipotle barbecue beef, beef tongue and cheek, glazed pork belly, and a fish of the week (mako shark now). An order of two costs $7-$9, while an order of three costs $9-$12.50. The duck is pricier.

The truckers themselves cover a few major food groups: Sultan and Nguyen own Street Food Philly and Taco Mondo, while Krawitz has Say Cheese. Sultan and Nguyen met while catering dinner parties for Peachtree & Ward in East Falls, in the same development as their commissary. They started Street Food Philly in 2011 and added Taco Mondo two years later. Krawitz launched his grilled-cheese specialist, Say Cheese, at Temple in 2012. All three trucks work at events now.

Revolution has a simple setup - counter with an open kitchen behind it, and a dining room with high-top seating at wooden tables - and the partners have expansion in mind.
