Sixers takeaways: Too much complaining, fans weary of subpar play and more notes

by Keith Pompey

The 76ers must stop complaining and just play. Paul George doesn’t know why he keeps finding himself in foul trouble. And Sixers fans are growing impatient with the team’s subpar performance. Those three things stood out in Friday’s 123-115 loss to the New Orleans Pelicans at the Wells Fargo Center.

The Sixers complain after every play that doesn’t go their way. Sometimes, players appear more focussed on arguing perceived missed calls than getting back on defense. Those antics led to two of their three technical fouls in Friday’s game.

Caleb Martin received a technical foul for speaking to a referee after a foul with 7 minutes, 28 seconds remaining and the Sixers down, 101-90. The Sixers lost some momentum when Nurse was called for a technical with 3:48 remaining. Philly went on a 9-0 run and closed the gap before the coach received the technical.

George has been in foul trouble too often for the Sixers' liking. The nine-time All-Star has been sidelined and booted after knick knack fouls. He fouled out against the Sacramento Kings. He also had five fouls against the Jazz and Blazers.

What has specifically led to his recent foul trouble? “The NBA … the NBA,” George said. “I couldn’t tell you that, especially when what goes on at the other end, and I’m the one that seems to be in foul trouble. So I couldn’t tell you.”

Philadelphia sports fans demand effort from the teams and players they root for. As a result, fans will voice displeasure when efforts are subpar. So, as expected, they let the Sixers hear it Friday night.

With 9:40 remaining, Daniel Theis galloped down the lane for a dunk to put the Pelicans up, 94-83. Nurse called timeout as boos rained down from the crowd. The Sixers' in-game operations crew tried to drown out the boos by turning up the music. But the crowd booed the team on other occasions and the conclusion of the game.
