When did ESPN BET launch?
Sports bettors saw ESPN BET go live with its ESPN BET promo code, sports betting app, and website on November 14th.
We didn’t know for the longest time exactly when we could expect the sportsbook to launch. But we received definitive news from PENN Entertainment CEO Jay Snowden, who gave us this information before the start of the 2023 NFL season.
“I also think the time of year that we’re launching, mid-season, is actually great. … I think we’re going to be able to make a lot of noise, get a lot of attention. And you’re coming in at a point in the year where people have probably burned through most of their bonus bet promos and deposit matches and so to be able to sort of reload mid-year with a new app and new experience that’s fully integrated with ESPN, I think that speaks to top of funnel.

Betting on the NFL with ESPN BET
The NFL is the most watched sport in North America, with all of the NFL playoff games that took place in 2023 ranking among the top 50 most watched sporting events of the year through Aug. 17, 2023.
ESPN is a popular destination for football fans to go for analysis throughout the season, with TV shows such as “First Take” being incredibly popular during football season.
When it comes to betting, the NFL is the most bet on sport in the country. A study conducted in October of 2022 by CRG Global revealed that 81% of bettors of legal betting age placed a bet on the NFL during September of 2022. That was 27 percentage points higher than the second-closest league, which was the NBA.
With November 14th being the launch date for ESPN BET, it’ll be interesting to see the site capitalize on flocks of new bettors early upon launch. With the American Gaming Association survey revealing 73.5 million Americans are expected to bet on the NFL this year, this could very well be true.
Betting on the NBA with ESPN BET
As mentioned above in the NFL section, the NBA is the second-most bet on sport in North America. Oct. 24 is when the 2023 NBA regular season tipped off, so the launch of ESPN BET will come at a perfect time.
ESPN focuses heavily on the NBA during the months when the NFL offseason is in session, with a slew of TV personalities including Stephen A. Smith primarily discussing basketball throughout the spring months.
Betting on the MLB with ESPN BET
Although MLB isn’t watched or bet on to the same degree as the NFL or NBA, there’s certainly a market for baseball betting during the summer months when football and basketball are both in their offseasons.
The November 14th launch of ESPN BET will be a little too late for MLB fans to wager this year, but bettors can look forward to the 2024 season.
ESPN BET legal states
There are 18 states in which the ESPN BET app is playable. Below is a list of these states, their retail partners, and when you can expect the state to go live with ESPN BET.
Future ESPN BET legal states
In addition to the numerous states that already have a PENN sports betting product licensed and live, it is also expected that ESPN BET finds its way into a few additional jurisdictions. But at this time, we can’t be sure where they plan on going next.
ESPN BET Betting Types
ESPN BET has a healthy selection of betting types available, as this is one of the most important things every sportsbook needs to nail in order to keep players returning to their platform.
Futures
Futures bets are predicting the outcome of something that won’t be decided until further out in the future. For example, at the start of the NBA season, you could place a futures bet on who you think the NBA Finals winner will be, who will win the NBA MVP award, and which team will win a certain division.
Moneylines
Moneyline markets are the most common and popular type of bet type you can place, with this simply being a matter of which team you think will win the game. For sports like baseball and soccer especially, the moneyline is a much more popular bet type than totals or spreads.
Parlays
Rather than just sticking to placing one singular bet, players will be able to create parlays on ESPN BET. Parlays let you combine multiple bets together into one all-encompassing wager that requires you to correctly predict each bet (Leg) of your parlay in order to win.
Some sportsbooks will occasionally run a promotion for parlay insurance, which essentially offers your stake back in case your parlay doesn’t win. It’s unknown whether the ESPN BET mobile app will run this type of promotion or not, but it’s something to keep an eye out for and consider using if the opportunity presents itself.
Prop Bets
There are multiple types of prop bets for sports bettors, including player props, team props, and game props. Player props are wagers you can place on players in a specific game, such as their point total or touchdown total.
Team props are wagers you can place on a team’s overall performance such as whether they will have over or under a certain amount of points by halftime. Finally, game props let you bet on the game as a whole, with examples being the winning margin and whether or not there will be overtime.
Round Robins
While parlays are a combination of single bets being placed into one cumulative bet, a round robin bet is multiple parlays being thrown together into one even larger bet that requires all of your parlays to hit for you to win.
Spreads
Spreads are also known as the run line in baseball, and this betting market just means the difference in the final score between the two teams. If a run line is -1.5, that means you win if your team wins by two or more runs. If it’s +1.5, you can win your bet if your team loses by one run or less or wins the game outright. In football and basketball, almost every game will have a designated point spread in order to even the playing field between two teams that are not on the same level in terms of talent.
Teasers
Teaser bets give players the flexibility to edit the spreads and the odds of games. You can change the spread to something you view more favorably, but you lower your odds by doing so.
Totals
Betting on totals markets just means you’re betting on the final score of the game. If the market has an O next to it, that means you think it’ll finish with more than those points. If there’s an U next to it, that means you think it will finish under that point threshold.
ESPN Sports Betting Markets
It shouldn’t come as a surprise to see any of the betting markets listed out below, as these are standard betting markets across most sports betting sites offers players already. The betting markets you can wager on at ESPN BET include:
NFL
NBA
MLB
NCAAF
NCAAB
Golf
MMA
Boxing
Soccer
Tennis
NASCAR
ESPN BET Unique Betting Markets
ESPN Bet offers a few unique markets you won’t be able to find in most other places. Here are a few examples:
Alternate Player Props
ESPN BET is one of the few sportsbooks that allows users to bet alternate player prop unders in same game parlays. Most sportsbooks only allow you to bet the upside – a player for 50+ yards, or 75+ yards at increased prices. However, in those books, you can’t capture a player’s downside because you’re stuck betting only the under on his normal prop line.
You don’t have an infinite number of options, of course. But it’s definitely a step in the right direction that you can take some alternate under. With Jalen Hurts, you can bet his alternate over 41.5 at +110, or alternate under 34.5 at +115, and any number in between.
Players to Not Score a Touchdown
Most sportsbooks don’t let you bet on things that will not happen: players to not score a goal, players to not score a touchdown, etc.
ESPN BET is one of the few on the market, and the only one among the major U.S. sportsbooks in double-digit states, that allows you to bet players to not score TDs. You can also bet a player to not score in the NHL.
Most people prefer to bet on the things that will happen. It’s awesome to see a sportsbook give you the option to bet the downside. It also helps keep the pricing in line on the “yes” side.
The Boosts
Each sportsbook offers some kind of boosted odds on pre-determined markets. Some are pretty bad, some are terrible, and only a few are worth betting blindly.
After that first weekend, it was definitely a mix. Twitter accounts that calculate the value of every NFL boost discovered that two of the nine NFL boosts on Sunday were +EV and worth betting.
That’s better than most sportsbooks!
However, with previous PENN products, only betting the +EV boosts can get you limited pretty quickly.
Banking Options at ESPN BET
ESPN BET has similar banking options to what other popular sportsbooks have, with the potential being there for them to add more. Most methods can be used to both deposit and withdraw funds, but there are a few such as credit and Apple Pay that are exclusive to deposits only.
ESPN BET Payment Methods
Payment methods at ESPN BET include:
Debit
Credit
Apple Pay
Online banking
ACH/eCheck
Wire transfer
Play+ account
ESPN BET Withdrawal Options
Withdrawal options at ESPN BET are as follows:
Debit
PayPal
Online banking
ACH/eCheck
Paper check
Play+ account
ESPN BET Payout and Processing Times
On ESPN BET’s opening weekend, many users experienced delayed payouts. Some withdrawals took over two days to process, which is well outside what’s become the norm in U.S. sports betting but is still within the timeline most sportsbooks give you.
Many users on Twitter complained about the inconsistency of payouts – some received certain payouts instantly, and others were still pending after two days.
Other users complained of verification times, as they waited 4-5 days to join the platform while customer support reviewed supporting documents and verified their accounts. Hopefully, these issues will improve as signups and registrations slow following ESPN BET’s opening weekend.
ESPN Responsible Gambling
The ESPN BET responsible gambling resources allow you to set deposit, withdrawal, and play limits on all accounts. There’s also a list of resources to contact if you have a gambling addiction or are starting to show signs of one.
